Continuing my challenge to create a new art piece every day for 30 days.
I think day 8 deserves its own post. Not because I really love the end result or would put it up on my wall but because of the unexpected challenge it gave me.
Every day of the 30/30 challenge there is a prompt that you can adhere to or ignore. Today’s prompt was “Triangle, cross, circle, square” so i immediately knew that this was the prompt for me!
I had the idea of creating a “pattern of patterns” and thought it wouldn’t take too long to do on an A5 card. However it proved to be more challenging than I expected.
I started with the lines marking out the different shapes, into which I intended to put different patterns. That part was fairly straightforward. Then started filling in the resulting rectangles with different patterns. Here’s where it got tricky.

After I had spent a considerable amount of time doing patterns in small boxes, I looked up to realise it had been an hour and I was only a quarter of the way through. I had to think hard to come up with different patterns for each box. Originally I planned to only use straight lines and circles but then resorted to more wavy patterns to keep things different. Ultimately as it got past two hours and I was running out of time, I resorted to filling in some boxes with basic straight lines. But I liked how these added to the composition without making it more complicated.
So ultimately I do like the result but it’s such a hodge podge of clashing patterns that I wouldn’t make this same piece in a larger size. Perhaps if I pre-planned all of the patterns I would use then it might work. But it would take sooooo long!!
